[Her expression is soft and sad as she listens. It reminds her of the brogue her father used to have, that he worked so hard to erase. She was so young when they left, it was easier for her. Easier, but not better.]

We left, too, because of religion. [Her lips twist into a wry little smile.] Funny, really - that's why the Gordons left Scotland.

[She shakes her head.] Wasn't as bad as what you went through, though. Worst part was leaving Mum behind.

[She doesn't realise it, but a trace of the old accent has slipped into her voice.]
