Some of you have been here for years. I want to know what you've learned. [He's testing the waters here, putting out feelers. Who's into this redemption line they're spoon feeding us, and who's willing to fight for their freedom. Just not in so many words.] Have you allowed them to try and change you? Do you believe everything they've promised?

I'm told you hate this ship and everything it claims to stand for. Was I misinformed?

I think it's time we find out just who sees reason among us. [A pause, and an afterthought:] It would be prudent of you to avoid a man named Charles Xavier.

I introduced myself once before, openly. I'm disinclined to repeat myself, but as I don't know who you are, it seems only fair to say that I am Erik Lensherr.

What's your name? How long have you been here?

The network's a busy place. You expect everyone to see everything you say, get ready for disappointment.

I've been here for ten months. The name's David.

[That just gets a tight lipped smile. Kids. He's getting used to them.]

Then you don't believe this nonsense about being dead, either.

[He looks away at that, his bravado flickering. No, he didn't believe it, not for a long time. But ever since Will...]

No... it's true. At least sort of true. I don't really understand how it works. But sometimes people here die and come back. And sometimes they don't.

Well I can tell you right now that I have never died, and I am certain I did not die to come here.

Do you want to go home, David?

What's it to you if I do?

Nothing. But I want to go home too.

It's been my experience that a group of people who desire something are more likely to achieve it than a person acting alone.

[He holds his breath for a moment.]

Yeah, that's true...

Have you met a guy named Arthas yet?

I'm speaking to him now. [He's waiting to hear why he asked.]

Arthas knows the score. He's been around longer than any other inmate. If anyone's gonna get us off the Barge, it's him.

[It's not hard to tell where his loyalty lies.]

[Makes it easy to walk around.] Has he told you the 'score?'

Yeah. He has. He trusts me. He knows I can get things done for him.

Can you? [He lets himself sound surprised, but not like he's looking down at David. Curious. Willing to be impressed.] What can you do?

Yeah. I can. [He bites it hook, line, and sinker of course. If David's ever had a weakness (and he has several), it's his near-pathological need to show off.] I might look like it, but I'm not just an ordinary kid.

And I'm not just an ordinary man. What's your gift?

[No one's ever called it a gift before.]

Here. Watch this.

[He lifts his hand to the screen so Erik can see it and concentrates. His brow furrows; just changing a specific part of him is hard, even now; he's not an estreen like Cassie. But he focuses. And as he does, his hand starts changing. Growing. until it's more of a paw than a hand.]

You're a shapeshifter. [The corner of his mouth twitches upward, but only briefly. He could use Raven's help here, but he doesn't think he'd want her subjected to this, either.] Any form?

[Go ahead David. Brag. That's what he's hoping for.]

Yeah. [He's not sure what to make of that weird half-smirk and the man's inexplicable lack of surprise. It's a little frustrating, because clearly he was expecting him to be more impressed. His hand shifts back to normal again and he lowers it.]

Anybody I can touch. Any human, any animal. If it's got DNA, I can become it.

[Not as immediate as Raven, then, but useful all the same. He lets himself smile.] That's quite the talent you have. I wasn't nearly as in control of my mutation at your age.

[A bit of a lie, but he doesn't see the harm. He lifts his hand, both in view, and the device floats up on its own, hovering in the air in front of him instead of propped up on the desk. He has gifts, too.]

[He watches this display, his eyes widening first in shock and then, realization.] ... Whoa.

How are you doing it? Are you some kind of psychic? [His power's useful, yeah, but that's the kind of ability he'd cut off a hand for. A part of him notes the use of the word 'mutation' and files it away - he doesn't contradict him, even if he's not a true mutant. He can think he is if he wants to.]

[A thoughtful look crosses Erik's face for just a moment. He's always used movements of some kind, whether its his hands or his eyes, and he wonders if the mutation is fully mental. He should probably experiment with that. Then it's gone, and he's focused on the question again.]

There's enough metal in it that I can move it. I control magnetism. [It felt good to say. This is what he does, it's who he is.]

[David whistles, clearly impressed. Magnetism. Now that's a power with some uses to it. And this guy's still got his powers, too. That'll only last until he gets paired, but until that happens...]

How much can you control? Enough to destroy this ship? [His first thought, of course, is brute force. It's what he would do.]

[Erik's hand clenches and the video trembles for a moment before steadying when he exhales. He's so, so angry about this, but he doesn't want to fly off the handle here.]

Not with them dampened like this. [He could have, though, and he WOULD have, and maybe that's the plan he should be nursing right now.]

[David watches calmly, perhaps even admiringly. He knows that anger. He lives with it every day. For Erik to feel it, in his mind, proves only that he's sane - sane, and a kindred spirit.]

It's the same way with me. I can only hold a morph for maybe ten minutes now. And my warden's locked me down from morphing into people. [There's a sarcastic little twist to his words at the words 'my warden' - Tim's the best of a bad lot, but he still thinks he can lord it over him, just like the rest of them.]

[Erik let's the corner of his mouth quirk up, nodding.] Out of fear for what you can do. It's disgusting.

They thought to wipe us out, where I come from. I wouldn't let them then. [And he won't tolerate it now.]
